Scott of the Antarctic.

My father, James Penny, wrote this account of Scott’s ill-fated expedition.

He wrote as “Angus Buchan”. Montrose is in Angus (he was a pharmacist there) and Nether Kinmundy (many Penny family connections) is in Buchan.

I recalled the paper that published articles about his walks across Scotland was the Montrose Standard. Googled the paper, searched for the 1930s and found this article written about Scott of the Antarctic by Angus Buchan. I did not know he wrote this particular piece!

The article (a historical account of Scott’s last expedition) was written in 1937 when Dad was 28. It was published almost to the day of the 25th anniversary of the ill-fated expedition.

Scott’s expedition was planned at a house in Glen Prosen (estate info courtesy of Savill’s – extract here) – near Kirriemuir (near Montrose) and the connection is Dad meeting the owner whose husband, Reginald Smith, published for J M Barrie (of Peter Pan fame). Walks into the Grampians from Montrose were via Glen Prosen and Glen Clova.
