When I was very young I recall Dad talking about these, to me then, strange flying objects. He had clear recollections of the “soos” (Doric for pigs) and could readily have seen them taking off and landing. He mentioned to me a girl who seemingly was an airship captain’s daughter who, I think, he went to see at the base. Years later (when I was about 46 and he 85) I mentioned driving past Cardington, Bedfordshire and he immediately talked about the R 101 airship which crashed in 1930.
I am unsure of the source of the material in this link which I have quite simply called Lenabo. It is titled “That was Lenabo – that was” seemingly with a nod to a 1962/63 satirical TV show “That was the Week – that was”. It appears to have been written “By a correspondent” who may well be William L Morgan mentioned on page 5 of the PDF. If so the material was written 53 years ago in 1969, 50 years after service at Lenabo. Fascinating personal recollections of Lenabo, historical material, two poems and some pictures.
This is an article I wrote in February 2021 for the Family History Society of Buchan, based on my father’s recollections – Lenabo a lasting memory.
