My father’s grandfather / my great grandfather whose birth is recorded as Rathen. He married Isabella Hutchison on 21 December 1861. My grandfather (George 1874 to 1926) and his son, my uncle George, both had Hutchison as a middle name. I saw several Hutchison gravestones at Longside.
The significance of this gentleman for me was my father talking about visiting him at, I thought, both Nether Kinmundy and Peterculter. Passed down to me and sitting on my desk is a ploughing medal James won, aged 31, in 1870. This gives the feeling of keeping some sort of long connection going over 150 years.
My connection has been strengthened in 2024 from Carol Cowan contacting me enabling both of us to add to our family links with James being a common point. In addition Carol’s mother, Joan, remembered me from her visiting my Grandma Penny in Rosemount Viaduct, Aberdeen probably about 70ish years ago. That prompted more research – not least into the source of a much cherished gramophone I have that came from my grandmother and uncle’s flat which my grandfather (George Penny) bought from “Cocky” Hunter at the end of WW 1.
